The JCC Maccabi Games is an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in North America and one of the largest organized sports program for Jewish teens in the world. Team Los Angeles-Westside JCC invites Jewish teen athletes ages 13-16 years old to represent the LA Jewish Community at one of the largest Jewish youth events in the world. The JCC Maccabi Games is a week-long Olympic-style event tournament complete with opening and closing ceremonies, passing of the torch, and Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. The Games are hosted by different cities around North America each summer. Over 3,000 teenagers from around the world compete in a variety of sports, participate in fun, meaningful community-service projects, and experience home hospitality and evening social events. Members of Team LA-Westside JCC not only attend the Games, but also connect with the program throughout the summer at team practices, community service and volunteer at SOVA, social events (like Jewish Community Day at Dodger Stadium), leadership programs and more! Classes: Basketball (K-3): In this fun and active class, students will learn basic basketball skills and scrimmage. Hip Hop (K-6): *NEW DAY* With exciting dance steps and challenging combinations, children learn to control and coordinate their bodies while working together to produce entertaining dances. Taught by the talented Miss. Cina, who has been working in the CYE afterschool programs and Camp Wise programs teaching hip hop for the past year. Homework Club (K-6): Homework Club provides a place after school where students can unwind from a long day, eat a snack and spend time finishing their homework. Students will work on their homework with friends or individually while supervised by CYE staff. Homework help provided by CYE staff. Also, open to Kindergarteners who need to stay later! Drop-ins are accepted by phone or online purchase before 1pm that day. Pick-up is at carpool at 5pm. Keyboarding (Grades 3-5 only): This class is specially designed for students who have basic skills and need to practice typing to develop speed and accuracy. Each student will be on their own level, but receive guidance and support from the instructor. Taught by the new science teacher, Mrs. Coatney! Kindergarten Extended (K only): Kindergarteners can stay an extra hour any day to play on the kindergarten yard with CYE staff until 3:30pm pick-up. Registration by semester preferred, but drop-ins are accepted by phone or online purchase before 1pm that day. Students are taken to regular carpool at 3:30pm. They must be signed out. Lego Workshop (K Only): Learn basic building techniques and explore your creativity in the technology innovation lab with lego robotics kits. Taught by the pioneering Judy Hoffman, who also teaches technology at Wise School and supervises Lego Robotics teams for grades 1-6. Martial Arts (K-6): Students will learn the fundamentals of martial arts with an emphasis on discipline, safety, and fun. Classes are designed for fun, learning new skills, and to becoming knowledgeable not in the art of self-defense, but in the lessons of life. Taught by the sweet Master Bella, from Lions TKD. Minecraft (K-6): *NEW* Learn Minecraft building techniques, details of command blocks, and some basic computer programming. Kids learn strategy, team building, and cooperation skills while playing Minecraft in a fun, safe, and supervised environment! Taught by Parker Anderson Enrichment. Rhythm and Math (K Only): *NEW * Students learn how to understand and master musical rhythm in a group setting while playing on beautiful hand-percussion instruments like djembe, cajon, bongos, shakers, and darbuka. We use a visualization system called The Rhythm Compass™ (taught at UCLA and UCD) that makes understanding rhythmic relationships fun and easy. The mathematics of rhythm are counting and cardinality, operations, ratios, and algebraic thinking. Taught by the talented Trey Macias from Sound Formation, Inc. an outstanding music educator that has trained in our unique method. Soccer (K-6): Taught by Soccer Shots, the leader in youth soccer development for children ages 2-8 by teaching principles and life skills like confidence, respect, honest, and teamwork though their high-energy, quality soccer program. Stretch-N-Grow (K Only): *NEW*: Students will learn to warm-up and stretch, moving to music, learning movement and coordination skills using a lot of props (e.g., tunnels, balance beams, cones, various balls, etc.) and playing games, while getting increasingly fit.
